Learn something while shopping: In the early days of car racing, drivers would often use their own cars and would not have a specific number assigned to them. The white circle, often placed painted on the doors of the cars, served as a placeholder for a number that could be added later if the driver acquired sponsorship or the race organizers assigned them a number.
This white circle is called Roundel and popular know as "Gumball" because of its shape and bright color.
Additionally, it allowed the driver to add their own number if they were competing in multiple races and needed to change it.
